How to Help the Elderly Avoid Loneliness?

How to Help the Elderly Avoid Loneliness

Loneliness can be harmful to our health, including our mental health, and for older people this can be even harder. Their home may once have been a thriving hub of activity, with children running around and constant visitors through the doors. However, families grow up and move away, leaving people feeling isolated and alone.

As an adult with senior parents, many adult children worry about their elderly parents being lonely and isolated. There are simple ways to overcome your aging parent’s loneliness.  Most importantly, it’s by encouraging them to stay active.

There are many ways to stay active socially and combat loneliness. Here are some helpful tips on how to prevent loneliness in old age.

Tips for Overcoming Loneliness in Seniors

  1. Stay in touch with friends and family.

It is great to see people in person, but phone calls, social media, and emails can help keep you connected too. If you’re not yet comfortable with computers, ask a young relative, friend, or neighbour to help you.

  1. Volunteer in your community.

Helping others is a fantastic way to give something back to the community and remind yourself that even later in life you too have a great deal to offer.

  1. Visit a senior centre.

Many local centres have fun and engaging activities for older people to participate in – this is a great way to make new friends, get out of the house, and do something fun!

  1. Join a group.

Your local library is a good resource that may have details of local groups available. Also, your local council can give you details of courses or groups that you may be interested in trying.

  1. Join a gym or fitness centre.

This is a great way to stay physically fit and engage with others. Staying socially active and maintaining your relationships are both important parts of healthy ageing. Stay as vibrant, active, and social as you’ve always been.
